4k vertical footage of Salticidae (Thiania bhamoensis). World Wildlife Conservation Day on December 4th. Shot in a tropical rainforest. Thiania bhamoensis widely known as the Fighting Spider or Metallic Blue Jumper is a striking species of jumping spider (family Salticidae). It is famous across Southeast Asia for its brilliant iridescent colors and its uniquely aggressive behavior among males. Why Fighting? In countries like Singapore Malaysia and Indonesia these have a long cultural history as "fighting spiders." Territorial Aggression: Males are highly territorial. When two males meet engage in complex "agonistic displays"—researchers have identified up to 12 distinct movements including pushing and sizing each other up. Cultural Pastime: For decades children and hobbyists have collected them in matchboxes (keeping them on a green leaf for moisture) to stage matches. A that wins multiple fights is often nicknamed the "First King." Unique Nesting Behavior Most jumping spiders are nomadic or build simple silk sacs but T. bhamoensis is a master architect. The Silk Rivet: They build a retreat by binding two green leaves together using silk rivets. It takes about 30 minutes to create a single attachment point and typically use 4 to 10 rivets to seal the leaves together. The Spider Lily: While they live on various plants have a strong preference for the Spider Lily (Crinum asiaticum). use the space between the bound leaves to rest molt and guard their egg sacs. Distribution and Habitat Range: Native to Southeast Asia spanning from Burma (Myanmar)—from which it gets its name (Bhamo)—to Sumatra Malaysia Singapore Thailand and Southern China. Habitat: Usually found in gardens forest edges and parks where they can be seen hunting in the sunlight on the surface of broad green leaves.
